Gareth Lowndes provides day-to-day direction for TB HIV Care activities in his role as Chief Operating Officer. Gareth ensures that a variety of operational and financial systems are in place and functioning well to ensure maximum efficiency and accountability.
Having been awarded a PhD through Bath University (UK) in 1994, Gareth spent a decade at Wits Medical School (SA). During this time he was a prominent member of the Faculty of Health Science Postgraduate Committee and was responsible for the implementation of two Masters courses within the Department of Pharmacy. Along with his role as Postgraduate Co-ordinator he supervised over 60 Masters theses.
In 2008, Gareth became involved in HIV prevention within the mining, construction and transport sector through Peer Educator Programmes. Key accounts included Anglo Platinum, Lonmin, Exxaro Resources, Group Five construction, Sasol and SANRAL.
In 2013, his focus turned towards large-scale voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) programmes administered under PEPFAR (CDC). A key area for mobilisation was within the workplace and higher education environment.
Prior to becoming TB HIV Care COO, Gareth managed the organisation’s programme that provides health services to over 90 correctional centres across three regions, offering support to approximately 46% of the inmates in South Africa.
